CDT Food Drops

We have 30 food drops on the CDT.  This means that we will be getting to a town every 4-5 days.  Our longest food drop is 7 days and the shortest is 2 days.

There are three different ways thru-hikers handle food drops: Mail all of our food, buy everything when you get to town, and a combination of these two.  We will be mailing most of our food.  Why?  Because it saves us a lot of time and money.  Since a number of towns on the CDT have  Walmart’s and other large grocery stores, we have sent only dinners, breakfasts, and  limited lunches to those locations.  We can buy other lunch items at the stores.  There are four of us and buying food in small towns can get very expensive.  Pulling together food for 5 months is a little daunting.  We have to plan very carefully to get the variety of food we will need and make a good guess as to what we will be wanting to eat in 4 or 5 months.  Having planned other long thru-hikes, we have a good idea of what we like to eat and what supplies we will need.

Some people have asked us if they could mail us care packages.  The answer is yes, but there are a few things to be aware of.

The most important thing is to address items to Tim Umstead or Ann Holston.  Make it “OR” not an “and”.  If an item is addressed with an “and” the Post Office will require both of us to be there to receive it.  Most of the time this will not be the case.  One of us will be off getting food or a room and the other will be getting the mail.  Please use “or”.

On the CDT there is only one food drop that only receive UPS, all others are US Post Offices.  I will note which food drop is which.  In some cases if you do not send the item by the correct carrier we will not get it.

To make sure your mail gets to us in time, mail it about two to three weeks before our arrival date.  Most places will hold our mail for 3-4 weeks.  One thing to remember is our itinerary is not written in stone.  We will deviate from it.  You will need to keep an eye on our location and our itinerary and adjust appropriately.
