We got early sun this morning on that open grasses knoll. Even so we did not want to get moving, but we did. The first thing we needed to do was a climb. In fact climbs and drops were the order of the day. We had about five of them a one was about 1,100′ climb. In many cases the trail builders decided that switchbacks were too much trouble, so they would make the trail go straight up. When that happens, we go up very slowly. We saw a small herd of elk after topping out on our first climb. Since we we silhouetted against the sky, the elk easily saw us and quickly run off. The day progressed quickly, and we continued to climb and drop over the green and treeless mountain ridges. In the afternoon, we finally worked our way up the last climb of the day, where we finally got to enjoy a long, but gentle big down. The trail goes 16 miles down a valley and we drop 3,000′. It was good to let the legs go and just walk.
